Live or work in the Darwin CBD and need an auto electrician? Cars here spend a lot of time parked in apartment and office car parks and do short trips around the city, so flat batteries, dash cams and warning lights make up much of the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in Darwin

The CBD is compact, so many cars here barely warm up before they are parked again. That pattern, plus the humidity, drives most of the city's call-outs.

Flat batteries in city car parks

A drive from Mitchell Street to the Waterfront and back is only a few minutes, which isn't long enough for the alternator to replace the power used to start the engine. Do that for weeks and the battery slowly runs down, then fails on a hot morning. Cars left in basements while owners fly out of Darwin are also prone to going flat. Our guide why does my car battery keep going flat covers the usual causes.

Dash cams and parking mode

Dash cams are popular with city drivers, and many people want parking mode so the camera keeps recording in the car park. Hardwiring a camera into the fuse box is neat, but it must use a low-voltage cut-off so it can't flatten the battery. In Darwin's heat, choose a camera rated for high cabin temperatures, as a car parked in the sun can get extremely hot inside. Route the cable away from the airbag in the A-pillar.

Hybrids and newer cars

Hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs are a growing share of cars around the CBD. Most still have a small 12V battery that runs the computers and locks, and when it goes flat the car won't start even with a full high-voltage pack. Testing and replacing the 12V battery is routine work. Anything involving the orange high-voltage cables, the inverter or the main battery pack is strictly for trained, licensed professionals.

Key fobs and central locking

Humidity gets into key fobs and door lock actuators, and coin batteries in remotes don't last long when the fob lives in a hot bag or car. If the remote works only up close, try a new fob battery first. If one door stops locking, it may be a worn actuator or a broken wire in the rubber boot between the door and the body. Both are usually fixable without replacing the whole locking system.

Warning lights on short trips

Cars that only do short trips around the city often throw warning lights for sensors that never get a chance to complete their checks, or for low battery voltage affecting the computers. Reading the fault code is the first step, and it often points to a simple cause. Our guide on how to read fault codes with an OBD2 scanner explains how to do it yourself.

Darwin auto electrical questions

Why does my car battery die every time I go away for a week?

Modern cars draw a small amount of power while parked to run alarms, keyless entry and computers. Add Darwin's heat, which wears batteries faster, and a week can be enough to flatten an older battery. Have the battery tested, and if you travel often, consider a maintainer in your car park or ask someone to start the car.

Can a dash cam drain my battery?

Yes, if it is wired to a permanent power source without protection. A proper hardwire kit includes a low-voltage cut-off that switches the camera off before the battery gets too low to start the car. Set the cut-off a little higher if your battery is older or you park for long periods.

Local tip for Darwin

If you park in a CBD basement and your car won't start, a portable jump starter is far easier than trying to get a second car next to yours. Keep it charged and out of direct sun, as lithium packs don't like being cooked in a hot car. Check it every couple of months so it is ready when you need it.
