Common auto electrical jobs in Karama

Karama has a high share of older cars kept for years, so many jobs are about fixing a single fault cheaply rather than replacing whole systems.

Starter motors on older cars

A click with no crank, or a slow and laboured start, is a common call in Karama. Before replacing a starter motor, check the battery, the terminals and the earth strap, as any of them can cause the same symptoms. Worn solenoid contacts are another cause and sometimes repairable. Testing first is the cheapest way to fix the right thing. Our guide is it my starter motor or my battery explains the difference.

Alternators and charging

If the battery warning light flickers on while driving, or the car needs a jump every few days, the alternator may not be charging properly. In Darwin, alternators work hard to power fans and air conditioning in the heat, and older units wear out. A charging system test takes a few minutes and tells you whether the battery, alternator or wiring is at fault. See battery warning light on while driving.

Central locking that stops working

In older cars, door lock actuators wear out and the wires running into the doors can break from years of opening and closing. Humidity adds corrosion to the mix. When one door won't lock with the remote, the fix is often a single actuator or a short wire repair. That is much cheaper than replacing body control modules, so ask for a diagnosis before agreeing to bigger work.

Blown fuses and dead circuits

A cigarette lighter socket that stops charging the phone, a dead radio or a light that won't work often comes down to a blown fuse. Replacing it is a simple job, but if the new fuse blows again there is a fault in the circuit, such as a chafed wire or a faulty accessory. Never fit a bigger fuse. Our guide how to check and replace a fuse walks you through it.

Karama auto electrical questions

Is it worth fixing electrical faults on an old car?

Often it is. Many faults on older cars are caused by one worn part, a corroded connection or a broken wire, and those repairs can be inexpensive. Ask for a diagnosis and a quote before work starts. If the repair costs more than the car is worth, at least you can make an informed choice.

How do I know if it's my alternator or my battery?

With the engine running, a healthy charging system usually shows about 13.8 to 14.7 volts at the battery. If it reads close to 12 volts, the alternator probably isn't charging. If the voltage is fine while running but the car still won't start the next morning, the battery is the more likely culprit.

Local tip for Karama

Keep a small fuse kit and a simple test light in the glovebox. Many small electrical faults in older cars are a blown fuse, and having spares on hand can save a call-out. Check the fuse box diagram in your owner's manual so you know which fuse controls what before something stops working.
